Friday, June 07, 2024

Sartorius, a leader in bioanalytical solutions, has opened its new Center of Excellence for bioanalytics in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This facility, developed with an investment of around 100 million US dollars, aims to consolidate Sartorius' operations in the area and is expected to expand its workforce significantly.

Dr. Alexandra Gatzemeyer, who leads the Lab Products & Services division and is a member of Sartorius' Executive Board, emphasized the role of the new facility in advancing biopharmaceutical development. "By centralizing our expertise and resources at this new site, we enhance our capability to meet critical needs in this innovative field," she said.

The state-of-the-art 130,000-square-foot center includes modern manufacturing facilities, biology labs, a warehouse, office spaces, and a Customer Interaction Center. Sartorius will be developing a variety of bioanalytical instruments, as well as the necessary reagents, consumables, and software. Additionally, the site will offer particle validation services and produce microcarriers for cell culture processes.

The facility is designed with sustainability in mind, targeting a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Sustainable features include a 200-kilowatt solar power system, 30 electric vehicle charging stations, and a newly constructed storm runoff pond.

Maurice Phelan, President of Sartorius North America, pointed out the strategic advantages of Ann Arbor's location, which provides access to talent, technology, and logistical support, as well as proximity to major universities. "The opening of our new center in the Tech Loop is a pivotal development for Sartorius in the Americas, setting the stage for future growth," he noted.

Sartorius has been part of the Ann Arbor community since acquiring local companies Essen BioScience in 2017 and SoloHill in 2020. The company currently employs about 2,600 individuals across 12 sites in North America.

Sartorius is internationally recognized in life sciences research and biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Its Lab Products & Services division provides innovative laboratory instruments and consumables, while the Bioprocess Solutions division offers a range of single-use solutions for the safe, rapid, and cost-effective production of biotech medicines, vaccines, and cell and gene therapies. Headquartered in Göttingen, Germany, Sartorius operates globally with approximately 60 production and sales sites, frequently expanding its technology portfolio through strategic acquisitions. In 2023, Sartorius generated sales of around 3.4 billion euros, employing about 14,600 people worldwide.
