Thermo Fisher Scientific Expands Its Clinical Research Facility in Wisconsin

Wednesday, June 19, 2024

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., a leader in scientific services worldwide, has launched a new clinical research laboratory at its GMP facility in Middleton, Wisconsin. This expansion, spanning 72,500 square feet, is intended to bolster the site's capabilities in chemistry, manufacturing, and control (CMC) analytics, aimed at supporting the development of life-saving medicines.

Leon Wyszkowski, President of Analytical Services for Clinical Research at Thermo Fisher Scientific, highlighted the importance of this expansion, noting, "As biopharmaceutical research continues to expand, we are enhancing our laboratory services to assist our clients in producing therapies that meet the highest standards of quality and safety for patients." He pointed out that the $58 million investment reflects Thermo Fisher's dedication to its mission of creating a healthier, cleaner, and safer world.

The GMP facility provides comprehensive analytical services for various products, including small molecules, biologics, biopharmaceuticals, inhaled pharmaceuticals, device testing, cell and gene therapy, protein characterization, and mass spectrometry across all phases of drug development. The new building features a flexible biosafety level 2 laboratory, specialized spaces for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and protein characterization, two large molecular suites with access-controlled labs for pre- and post-amplification processes, and two general-use labs. This expansion will add up to 350 new positions for scientists and laboratory support staff, increasing the workforce at the site to nearly 2,300 employees.

Earlier this year, Thermo Fisher also introduced biosafety testing to its GMP service portfolio at Middleton. This new addition and the facility expansion now provide a comprehensive suite of end-to-end laboratory services.

Governor Tony Evers of Wisconsin commented on the significance of the new facility, stating, "As Wisconsin's biohealth sector continues to grow, this state-of-the-art facility will not only advance our state's biosafety testing capabilities but also create hundreds of jobs, helping to protect consumers and improve patient health outcomes throughout the state."

In addition to the GMP and bioanalytical labs in Middleton, Thermo Fisher's clinical research laboratory network includes bioanalytical, biomarker, and vaccine sciences labs in Richmond, Virginia; a GMP lab in Athlone, Ireland; central labs and biomarker operations in Brussels, Belgium, Highland Heights, Kentucky, and Singapore; as well as bioanalytical, biomarker, vaccine sciences, and central labs in Suzhou, China.
