Suitable Alternatives to Fetal Bovine Serum
Alternatives to Fetal Bovine Serum for Routine Cell Culture
Optimize routine cell culture workflows with cost-effective alternatives to fetal bovine serum (FBS). This study evaluates DBS, DBS-iron, and NBCS across HeLa, CHO-K1, HepG2, and HL-60 cell lines for growth, viability, and assay compatibility. Results showed that DBS-iron delivered performance closest to FBS in maintaining healthy cell growth and viability.
The study also assessed transfection efficiency, differentiation potential, protein expression, and drug response assays, helping researchers identify reliable solutions for routine cell culture applications while addressing the increasing cost and supply challenges associated with FBS.
Key Highlights
- DBS-iron delivered growth and viability performance closest to FBS across multiple cell lines.
- HeLa and CHO-K1 cells adapted effectively to alternative sera conditions.
- DBS-iron showed superior performance in HepG2 and HL-60 routine culture workflows.
- FBS remained the preferred choice for transfection and differentiation applications.
- The study evaluated viability, doubling time, protein expression, and drug response assays to identify reliable and cost-effective FBS alternatives.
