AstraZeneca Announces $4.5B Investment in Virginia Production Facility
Introduction
AstraZeneca has announced a $4.5 billion investment in its new manufacturing facility at Rivanna Futures in Albemarle County, Virginia.

The facility will produce drug substances for AstraZeneca’s weight management and metabolic portfolio, including oral GLP-1, baxdrostat, oral PCSK9, and combination small molecule products.
The expanded scope now also includes state-of-the-art manufacturing for AstraZeneca’s antibody drug conjugate (ADC) cancer portfolio.
The facility will leverage advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation, and data analytics to optimise production.
It will create around 600 highly skilled jobs, including engineers, scientists, and process facilitators, and an additional 3,000 roles in construction and related support.
Construction work will begin immediately, and the facility is expected to be operational within four to five years.
