AstraZeneca Expands U.S. Manufacturing Capacity with $2B Maryland Investment
Introduction
AstraZeneca has announced plans to invest $2 Billion in expanding its manufacturing operations in Maryland, strengthening its presence in one of the United States’ leading life sciences regions. The investment includes a major expansion of the company’s biologics facility in Frederick and the development of a new clinical manufacturing site in Gaithersburg.
Features
The Frederick site, which currently produces biologic medicines for conditions such as cancer, autoimmune diseases, respiratory disorders and rare illnesses, will see its commercial manufacturing capacity almost double.
The expansion will introduce production capability for rare disease treatments for the first time. It is expected to generate 200 new specialist roles, alongside 900 construction jobs.
In Gaithersburg, AstraZeneca will construct a new state-of-the-art facility focused on clinical manufacturing for early-stage and innovative medicines used in trials. This site is set to create 100 new jobs, retain 400 existing roles and support around 1,000 construction positions. Like the Frederick expansion.
Both locations will incorporate advanced technologies, including AI, automation and data-driven systems, and will be designed to meet stringent environmental standards. The investment forms part of AstraZeneca’s wider £39bn* global growth plan announced earlier in the year, which includes several new manufacturing commitments across the United States.
Both the expanded Frederick facility and the new Gaithersburg clinical manufacturing site are scheduled to be operational in 2029.
