Eli Lilly Breaks Ground on US$6.5 billion Houston Manufacturing Site

Introduction

Eli Lilly and Company has broken ground on a new pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas, as part of its broader US manufacturing expansion. The US$6.5 billion site will produce active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for Foundayo (orforglipron), Lilly’s oral GLP-1 medicine, along with other small-molecule medicines and advanced therapies.

Features

The Houston facility will manufacture Foundayo (orforglipron), a synthetic oral GLP-1 receptor agonist, as well as other small-molecule medicines and advanced therapeutics.

The site will also support production of oligonucleotide medicines, which are designed to influence protein production at the genetic level.

Lilly plans to incorporate artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital systems and advanced data analytics into manufacturing operations to improve production efficiency, quality and supply reliability.

The project is expected to create more than 600 high-skilled jobs in areas including engineering, science, manufacturing operations and laboratory services.

Construction and site development are expected to support approximately 4,000 jobs.

Lilly is also investing US$12.5 million in a partnership with San Jacinto College to develop training pathways for advanced manufacturing roles.

Alongside a US$2.5 million donation to support student scholarships.

The Houston facility is part of Lilly’s broader US manufacturing programme, which includes multiple API, injectable medicine, device and genetic medicine production sites.
