Introduction

Novartis has begun construction on a new global Biomedical Research centre in San Diego, California, as part of a USD 23 billion investment in US research and development and advanced manufacturing. The centre is expected to strengthen drug discovery capabilities and enhance the company’s global scientific network.

Features

The new facility will cover approximately 466,000 square feet and it is expected to accommodate around 1,000 employees and will collaborate closely with Novartis’ research sites in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Basel, Switzerland.

The centre will support end-to-end drug discovery in key therapeutic areas including neuroscience, oncology, global health, and age-related conditions such as regenerative medicine.

It will also advance Novartis’ work in emerging technology platforms, including gene and cell therapies, RNA-based treatments, biologics, targeted protein degradation, and innovative drug delivery systems.
