Samsung Biologics Expands U.S. Manufacturing with $280 Million Acquisition of Human Genome Sciences
Introduction
Samsung Biologics has announced the acquisition of Human Genome Sciences from GSK, marking its first U.S.-based manufacturing site. The Rockville, Maryland facility will expand the company’s global manufacturing network and strengthen its long-term commitment to the U.S. market. This strategic move supports the production of critical biologic medicines and enhances supply chain resilience.
Features
The Rockville site includes two cGMP manufacturing plants with a combined capacity of 60,000 litres, supporting both clinical and commercial production at small and large scales.
Samsung Biologics plans further investment to expand capacity and upgrade technology at the site.
The acquisition ensures the continued manufacture of existing products while integrating the facility into Samsung Biologics’ global network, offering clients flexible multi-site options in the U.S. and Korea.
Samsung Biologics currently operates five manufacturing plants with a total capacity of 785,000 litres, the largest in the industry, supporting a diversified portfolio that includes monoclonal antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), mRNA therapies, organoid-based services, and next-generation biologics.
The Rockville facility strengthens the company’s U.S. footprint and aligns with broader initiatives to maintain reliable production of life-saving therapeutics.
The acquisition is expected to close by the end of Q1 2026, after which the facility will officially become part of Samsung Biologics’ global operations.
