Sandoz to Invest US$300 Million in New Biosimilar Facility in Ljubljana

Introduction

Sandoz is investing approximately US$300 million in a new biosimilar drug substance manufacturing facility in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The investment will expand the company’s in-house manufacturing capacity and strengthen its Europe-based end-to-end biosimilar development, manufacturing, and supply network. The facility will use disposable fed-batch (DFB) technology and support both clinical and commercial manufacturing.

Features

The new facility will add approximately 8,000 litres of manufacturing capacity through four disposable fed-batch (DFB) reactors.

The facility will support the production of biosimilar drug substances for both clinical development and commercial manufacturing, expanding Sandoz’s ability to accommodate future portfolio growth.

Located next to Sandoz’s recently opened biosimilar development centre, the facility will support technology transfers and accelerate scale-up activities from development through commercial production.

The investment will strengthen Sandoz’s Europe-based biosimilar manufacturing network, which includes low-, mid-, and high-volume production technologies, providing greater flexibility across manufacturing requirements.

The new facility is intended to enhance operational control and manufacturing capacity across the biosimilar product lifecycle while supporting the company’s long-term biosimilar portfolio strategy.

The project is additional to previously announced investments in Sandoz’s biosimilar development and manufacturing network in Slovenia.
