UC San Diego Health Introduces Novel Melanoma Therapy
UC San Diego Health provided a new immunotherapy treatment for metastatic melanoma. This innovative cellular therapy, derived from tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL), is the first solid tumour therapy approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
This one-time cellular immunotherapy offers a powerful option for patients with advanced melanoma who have not responded to other approved treatments and have limited alternatives available.
The TIL therapy process involves collecting and isolating the patient's unique cancer-fighting T-cells from the surgically removed tumour. These T cells are then expanded and stimulated to enhance their ability to Identify, infiltrate, and attack cancer cells before being reinfused into the patient.
Clinical trials for TIL therapy have shown promising results, demonstrating better treatment outcomes compared to other options for patients whose melanoma has progressed after standard frontline therapies.
The introduction of cellular therapy could offer the possibility of remission for some melanoma patients and provide an additional option for those whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
In addition to TIL therapy provides CAR T-cell therapy, another promising immunotherapy for specific blood cancers, including non-Hodgkin lymphomas and multiple myeloma.
Patients benefit from tailored care provided by leading physicians and can participate in clinical trials exploring new and promising treatment options.
