The University of Chicago Medicine is set to prescribe Resmetirom, a groundbreaking drug marketed as Rezdiffra
For the treatment of advanced metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Resmetirom, having received FDA approval on March 14, 2024, is the first medication sanctioned for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), an advanced MASLD stage marked by liver inflammation and fibrosis.
Liver Disease at UChicago Medicine, underscored its potential impact on preventing severe outcomes associated with liver disease.
Collaborating with research colleagues from UChicago Medicine and other institutions, played pivotal roles in a phase three clinical trial of Resmetirom.
The trial reported positive results in February 2024, revealing significant progress in halting or reversing liver fibrosis progression among participants who received Resmetirom.
As Resmetirom enters clinical use, collaborators continue to extend the phase three trial to investigate long-term outcomes.
They stress the importance of focusing routine healthcare and screenings on diagnosing patients with MASH to fully leverage this breakthrough.
