Dr. Simon Johannes Bulling
ProBioGen has appointed Dr. Simon Johannes Bulling, PhD, as Chief Operating Officer (COO).
In this role, he will lead the company’s operational business and oversee the manufacturing of innovative biologics across ProBioGen’s expanding portfolio, including proteins, viral vectors, and cell and gene therapy products. His appointment further strengthens ProBioGen’s position as a trusted partner in the global biopharmaceutical industry.
Dr. Bulling brings extensive leadership experience across the global biopharma and CDMO sector, with expertise spanning both drug substance and drug product operations. He has a strong track record in scaling manufacturing organizations, building high-performing teams, and translating strategic priorities into measurable operational outcomes in highly regulated environments.
Prior to joining ProBioGen, Dr. Bulling served as Site Head at Celonic and was a member of its Executive Committee. He has also held senior leadership positions at Recipharm, Rentschler Biopharma, Vetter Pharma, and Sandoz, where he was responsible for operations, manufacturing, organizational development, and performance improvement across multi-site organizations.
Most recently, he has advised biopharmaceutical companies on manufacturing strategy, operational scale-up, and organizational development within GMP environments. He holds a PhD from the Medical University of Vienna.
Dr. Bulling’s appointment comes at a pivotal stage in ProBioGen’s growth as the company continues to expand its operational capabilities across biologics, viral vectors, vaccines, and advanced therapies. Recent investments include the expansion of manufacturing capacity for proteins and viral vectors to support clinical supply, as well as the planned establishment and operation of a GMP cell therapy manufacturing facility at the Berlin Center for Gene and Cell Therapy (BC GCT). These initiatives significantly enhance ProBioGen’s ability to support partners from early development through to commercial manufacturing.
