Michael Severino, M.D

Sarepta Therapeutics, Inc., a leader in precision genetic medicine for rare diseases, has appointed Michael Severino, M.D., as Chief Executive Officer. Severino will also join the company’s Board of Directors.

Severino succeeds Doug Ingram, who is retiring and will remain with Sarepta in an advisory capacity through the end of 2026 to support a smooth leadership transition.

Bringing more than 25 years of biopharmaceutical experience, Severino most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of Tessera Therapeutics and as a CEO-Partner at Flagship Pioneering, positions he held since 2022. Before joining Tessera, he was Vice Chairman and President of AbbVie, where he led research and development and the corporate strategy office.

During his tenure at AbbVie, Severino helped expand the company’s pipeline and develop capabilities in genetics and genomics, computational biology and precision medicine. He contributed to the development of more than a dozen approved therapies, including Rinvoq®, Skyrizi® and Venclexta®, while helping build leading franchises in hematologic oncology, immunology and neuroscience.

Earlier in his career, Severino held senior roles at Amgen, ultimately serving as Senior Vice President, Global Development and Chief Medical Officer. He oversaw clinical development across oncology, inflammation, neuroscience, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Before Amgen, he was a Senior Director at Merck & Co., where he led research programs in clinical genomics, molecular profiling and experimental medicine.

In addition to Sarepta, Severino serves on the boards of Avantor, Montai Health, Quotient Therapeutics and Viatris.

Severino earned a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Maryland, College Park, graduating summa cum laude and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University and completed residency and postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
